Omaha Orange: A Popular History of EMS In America  ISBN 0763721387

Carl J. Post, Ph.D, EMT (Ret)

Widely considered for many years to be the definitive work on the history of EMS in its time, this work by Carl Post stands on its own merit.

An excerpt from the Foreword:  " During the period between 1964 and 1990, EMS was created, brought to life, raised to the level of a national movement, left to wither without help from either a nation of volunteers or investors from the corporate sector, and finally just ignored while being allowed to rust."

Dr. Post served as an Evaluator for the U.S. Public Health Services Division of EMS, served as the Co-Director of the Emergency Medical Services - New York Medical College from 1988 - 2002, and was an EMS Educator at Hahnemann University, among other challenges in his life.   Dr. Post teaches online history, humanities and EMS for Capella, Adelphi and Kaplan, as well as teaching Politics and Humanities at Kean and Montclair. He is working on his fourth novel.  Carl was a New York EMT for six years and rode and wrote about riding in New York City. Many of his articles about it are in the National Library of Medicine.  He is also the New York State Archivist for the NEMSMF.

"Paramedic: Buff to Burnt" ISBN 1419602616                                    George Steffensen  (former) NYC*EMS Paramedic

A Paramedic since 1987, this is not the first book by George Steffensen, and likely not the last!  The story of his career on the streets of New York, the book is the most personal of his projects.

Excerpt:  "I have had a great time working as a paramedic.  I'm not retired yet, so maybe I can write more stories another time........Of course, reading or hearing the stories can't get you to see it completely.  My brother gave me a great example when I asked him what Marine boot camp was going to be like.  He told me "I can't tell you it burns to put you hand into a fire, but until your hand is in the fire you can't really understand what it is like."

George Steffensen is still active today.  In fact, he recently came through my Cardiology station at a Registry exam in pursuit of NREMT certification - after all these years!  He was the consumate professional and gentleman.  Wish him luck on his journey...
