1800's: Ambulance: Horse Drawn-(rear view)

2007P000008MPHorseAmb_Rearview_proj.jpg

This vintage photo shows the rear of a typical horse drawn ambulance that was used in New York City during the 19th century. The stretcher was designed to slide out therefore allowing the earsier laying of a person who had been carried out in the arms of a family member or other acquiantance. As you can tell, there was no treatment equipment aboard ambulances of this era. Usually, only the driver responded with the carriage.
